Riding with Refugees

This weekend I had the pleasure of attending a charity event to raise awareness of many different organizations that assist refugees and immigrants. I had been there representing the YMCA and setting up a booth so people attending the event could learn more about what the YMCA does and why it is important. We handed out pamphlets and even had a little game with prizes to promote people to visit. But, the best part of the event is that it was a biking event! The event was a biking race around the surrounding area, which took approximately an hour to an hour and a half, and was led by a surprising guest: state representative Gene Wu. The opportunity to meet such an influential figure was one I did not take lightly, and one that I will forever appreciate. He was nothing but kind and had a genuine interest in this event, an interest I never would have expected. The event itself was amazingly organized. The event had many different organizations show up and interact in order to drive encouragement of Refugee and immigrant support and people to want to volunteer. At the event, I was able to not only see the amazing different organizations who volunteered their time just to promote the amazing things they do for refugees, but also the amazing job that the event itself did to keep everyone safe. This event also helped to encourage safety while riding bikes, with officers in the back making sure their were no deadly accidents and everyone was riding safely. As a biker, the upholding of safety along with support for refugees made the event unforgettable. If you are in the Houston area, I highly recommend attending this event.
